The mission of the Nature’s Way Montessori School Nature Preserve aligns with our guiding principle of strengthening a connection with nature. The Nature Preserve is an intentional space dedicated to:
- Mindful refuge, solace and reflection to allow the self to bond with the Earth
- Experiential learning that deepens and integrates our studies and inspires our creativity
- Respectful utilization, protection and appreciation of land, nature and all life
The northeast portion of the Nature’s Way property is a designated nature preserve which allows children to observe and experience our rich hardwood forest and its unique flora and fauna. There are two interconnecting loop trails with fourteen interpretive markers indicating unique features including sinkholes, rock outcroppings, native plants, and various ecological niches. A corresponding trail guide brochure takes hikers back in time with descriptions of prehistoric creatures whose remains can be observed in the rocks and interesting geological facts that bring history to life.
On any given day, one can find class communities using the outdoor classroom. This is located off the nature trail, and can be used to cook, enjoy a fire in the fire ring, hold community meetings, or sit quietly and observe the natural world. The nature preserve also provides opportunities for nature hikes, identification of plants, trees, and animal habitats.
